Ensemble Artaserse Andreas Scholl countertenor Philippe Jaroussky countertenor
The countertenor voice – the highest male voice, equivalent in pitch to the female mezzo – experienced a formidable renaissance during the 20th century, in part due to the burgeoning interest in music of the early period (though modern composers, from Britten to Thomas Adès have also written roles for the voice).
One of the standard bearers of the countertenor in recent years has been Andreas Scholl, whose acclaimed voice has thrilled opera audiences and even reduced the boisterous Last Night of the Proms crowd to hushed silence. Another Baroque specialist, Philippe Jaroussky has emerged in recent years as another worthy member of the gloriously rich club of today's countertenors, his sweet voice and pure tone endearing him to audiences. He is also the founder of tonight's ensemble Artaserse.
‘Scholl takes the international approach, combining rock-star charisma with a voice that travels directly down your spine.’ The Guardian
