Haydn Symphony No 99 Beethoven Piano Concerto No 2 Nielsen Symphony No 6
Sir Colin Davis conductor Mitsuko Uchida piano London Symphony Orchestra
Beethoven made his public debut as a pianist with this dramatic concerto in 1795 – at a concert held to raise funds for widows and orphans. Haydn composed his 99th Symphony for a visit to London in 1793; it includes a strikingly elegiac wind choir. When Nielsen began work on his final symphony (1925), he thought it might prove ‘more amiable and smooth’ than his previous works. It is certainly irradiated by sunlight and shadows.
