Tom Courtney plays the rebellious teenager who uses fell running in the Lancashire hills to escape from his background of poverty and abuse. Sent to a bleak young offender’s institution his athletic talent is spotted by the Governor (Michael Redgrave) who enters him into a cross-country race against the local public school.
Having cut his teeth in the Free Cinema documentary movement, by 1962 Tony Richardson had emerged as a major figure in the so called “New Wave” of British cinema with landmark films Look Back in Anger and A Taste of Honey under his belt. In his adaptation of Alan Stillitoe’s novel he again focuses on the plight of the working class in the stark reality of life in the industrial North.
