Having cut his teeth in the Free Cinema documentary movement, by 1962 Tony Richardson had emerged as a major figure in the so called “New Wave” of British cinema with landmark films Look Back in Anger and A Taste of Honey under his belt. In his adaptation of Alan Stillitoe’s novel he again focuses on the plight of the working class in the stark reality of life in the industrial North.
Also featuring early appearances from James Bolam, John Thaw and James Fox.

+ Tomorrow's Saturday (U*) A million miles from the metropolitan glamour of the Swinging Sixties revolution Michael Grigsby’s short film documents in stark contrast the life of millworkers in a Lancashire industrial town as they enjoy their Saturday away from the factory. Rejecting scripted voice-overs and staged action, Tomorrow’s Saturday is a classic example of the free cinema aesthetic.
