Stalin’s death and the gradual thaw in Eastern European politics led to the emergence in the 1960s of new and unconventional filmmaking voices.

A cornerstone of the ‘new wave’ that rolled through Czechoslovakia in these years, Forman’s film pokes gentle fun at the Communist authorities beneath its central love story. The director, of course, would later go into exile.
