John Harbison and André Previn stand as two of America’s most vital living composers, following in the footsteps of that giant of 20th-century American classical music, Aaron Copland. The five movements of Harbison’s symphony are labelled ‘Disconsolate’, ‘Nostalgic’, ‘Militant’, ‘Passionate’ and ‘Exuberant’, giving us a clue as to the work’s all-encompassing nature. Copland’s Appalachian Spring Suite is most famous for its radiant treatment of the well-known Shaker melody ‘Simple Gifts’.
