‘If I could paint or at least think in material...’ (Oskar Schlemmer, Sep 1918)
Influenced by the Bauhaus, this event is about transformation - not just the alluring or intriguing visual transformation that dress, costume and bodily accoutrements can achieve, but a real and lasting transformation in wearer, witness and maker. Dr Melissa Trimingham applies this notion to her work with autistic children, and Donatella Barbieri explores synergies with the Bauhaus via narratives, gestures and performed meanings deriving from Lecoq’s LEM workshop.
The Embodied Researcher is part of a series of talks initiated by Donatella Barbieri, Senior Research Fellow of Design for Performance, jointly at London College of Fashion and Victoria and Albert Museum. Titled Making the Paradigm Shift in Design for Performance through Costume, the series includes conversations with Professor Deborah Landis and with Nicky Gillibrand.
The transcript for these will be available on www.encountersinthearchive.com in the near future, as will the transcripts for this event.
