My First Panto

My first experience of pantomime was a production of Dick Whittington in Salisbury that my parents took my brother and me to. We went to that particular show because a family friend, Vera, was part of the stage crew. On the way there my mum explained to Ed and me what it was that we were about to see and told us, amongst other things, that at one point in the show Veras pet rabbit would be making an appearance.

I cant remember a great deal about the show because I spent nearly all of it desperately waiting for the moment when Veras pet rabbit would appear. When it finally made its entrance the whole theatre went aaah, apart from our family who all cheered loudly. We may even have applauded. The rabbit wasnt on stage for very long and it cant have had that many lines, but it still gave a very confident and assured performance, without even a hint of nerves. Considering rabbits general tendency to freeze in the spotlight, this must have been quite a rabbit.

Afterwards we went to the stage door and had the opportunity to meet him in person. Off stage he was remarkably quiet and unassuming, quite at odds with the belligerent persona that he had assumed during the show. I now know this to be typical of many performers, but at the time it came as a bit of a surprise. He might just have been tired, of course; the poor fellow must have been doing about twelve shows a week.
