Benjamin at the Barbican

George Benjamin is not only one of Britain’s most admired living composers: he’s an alchemist, transforming subtle and exquisite combinations of sounds into vast and passionate emotional landscapes.

This Composer Focus lays his genius bare, with Benjamin talking about and introducing his chamber music, before conducting a definitive cast in a concert performance of his astonishing, internationally-acclaimed Written On Skin – hailed by critics at its 2012 premiere as the finest new opera of recent decades. And because any Benjamin premiere is a major occasion, a new orchestral work for the BBC Symphony Orchestra makes these two days of music far more than just a retrospective.

Benjamin tells us about the challenges of composing for opera, teaching, and a life long love of music in this podcast, also featuring an interview with counter-tenor Iestyn Davies.
