This September sees the eagerly-awaited opening of Milton Court, the Guildhall School’s new state-of-the-art facilities including a 600-seat concert hall which will provide a top-notch venue for London audiences to enjoy smaller ensembles, recitals and chamber music.
The acoustics in the new hall are second to none, having been designed by the renowned Arup Acoustics, the go-to acousticians for the world’s best concert halls and the people behind Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall and the Sydney Opera House. Philip Wright, director at Arup explains 'the concert hall sounds just like I wanted it to, a warm, blended, and rich sound that is engaging and immersive. It represents a rare opportunity in London to realise an ideal blend of volume, clarity and fullness. We were as confident as we could be that it would sound fantastic but it was only when we did the final series of tests with musicians from the Guildhall School that we knew just how good it really was.'
Our associate ensembles the Academy of Ancient Music and Britten Sinfonia will be making full use of the fantastic acoustics working with big-name guest artists including Angelika Kirchschlager, Alina Ibragimova and Imogen Cooper. And in its opening season the hall will host a wide selection of world-class musicians, from the young artists in our ECHO Rising Stars series who are just beginning their professional careers, to the Gewandhaus Quartet, musicians from the Mariinsky Theatre, and the Arditti Quartet, all already well-established on the world stage.
